On January 21, 2015, The Mountain Goats announced their Regional Heat Tour in support of their new album, Beat The Champ, released in the United States on April 7, 2015. The tour contained two legs; an Eastern United States leg in April, and a Western U.S. leg in May and June. It was announced on the official Mountain Goats website in the same post announcing the new album. The touring lineup was John Darnielle on acoustic guitar, piano, and vocals, Peter Hughes on bass guitar and backing vocals, Jon Wurster on drums, and Matt Douglas on clarinet, piano, second guitar, and saxophone. It is the first full-band Mountain Goats tour since the Nameless Dark Tour 2012.

Ides of Gemini was originally announced as the opening act for the entire first leg of the tour. However, a few shows into the tour, drummer Kelly Johnston suffered a herniated disc in her spine and the band were forced to withdraw. Flock of Dimes opened the D.C. show, Holy Sons, opened the Webster Hall show, and Stephen Brodsky opened for the rest of the first leg. The opening act for the second leg was Blank Range for all shows except for Dallas and Austin, where Pinkish Black was the opening act, and Pioneertown, where Aimee Mann co-headlined.
