Tampa is an unreleased song by the Mountain Goats. It was originally intended to be included on The Coroner's Gambit.

My brother and me found out where you keep your ugly secrets hid
We dug up the missing one this morning
I know why you did what you did
Yeah we found him naked in the snow
Down where the wild crocus grow
And I don't wanna do this anymore
Yeah I ain't wanna fight your dirty little war

Yeah my brother said not to drop another dime 'cause
He ain't comin' out next time, and you can
Soak in a bathtub full of gasoline, but you will
Never get your hands clean

Yeah the building was glowing, fires were raging within
You ran out to save your own skin
Well I probably shouldn't blame you
Yeah I probably shouldn't blame you
But by God, I do
And I found the photographs in the top dresser drawer
But I ain't gonna fight your dirty little war

Comments by John Darnielle About this SongEdit

  • "...But there was one song from early on, when the album was still called Jab-Jab, that pushed it toward being a record about death and terminal places. The song didn’t end up on the album. It was called "Tampa." If you can get a tape of the set I did at Terrastock in San Francisco, I think I opened with it there. It was a terribly dark song about someone who finds a body buried in the snow, and when I noticed that both it and "Family Happiness" were probably going to be on the same record, I thought: 'Why not point the whole album toward the grave?'" -- Space City Rock interview
