Comments by John Darnielle About this AlbumEdit

  • "The title is kind of a joke, because we shall not be healed. That’s what’s kind of sad, but funny in a bad way, about it. Everybody, everybody thinks ‘oh, we’re going to be healed. We know because our title says so.’ But we will not be healed." -- 2003-10-03 - Berbati's Pan - Portland, OR
  • "We Shall All Be Healed, I think, partly had to do with, with wanting to, uh, expose my heavy druggie past, you know. Because, because people had, have this image of me as a, uh, a very innocent professorial guy, and as an ex-junkie, that really annoyed me, that people would think 'you know, squeaky-clean John.' And I would think - yeah, no, no. I mean, I'm glad, that, that, on the one hand, that I look like that. On the other hand, that's really not who I am, and so there, there wound up being this real disconnect for me between, you know, how I think of myself and how other people imagine me. And, uh, and so I think that was maybe the impetus, you know, was just, it'd feel kind of risky, you know - whenever I say to somebody, you know, I'm an ex-junkie, they look at me and say, 'You?' Well, yeah. So, uh, so I think that was how it started, and the songs happened to be good, you know, and Peter, my bassist, was, was big into 'em and sort of goaded and pushed me to go more in that direction." -- 2005-06-16 - KEXP Session - Seattle, WA
  • "I spent a long time trying to decide whether the title of that album was sort of a dark irony, or is God's own truth, right? It's hard to say, when you're talking about heroin addicts and speed freaks. You cross your fingers. You want to believe, but you have seen the signs in the sky." -- 2011-04-02 - Castaways - Ithaca, NY
